Dr Siri has arranged a holiday: an all-expenses-paid trip to the northern mountains of Laos. What's more, through a bit of clever bargaining (well, blackmail) he has managed to make it possible for his closest friends and family to join him. They are to assist a US-funded search for a missing CIA pilot - Boyd Bowry - who has been missing since his aircraft was shot down in 1968.
But Siri isn't taking the search too seriously, as he strongly suspects that when the helicopter exploded, the pilot didn't survive either. However, just hours into the trip, it becomes clear that hidden motives are at play within the group. And Siri's suspicions are confirmed when those connected to the airman start dropping like the insects that swarm his country.
Siri and his companions are caught up in something big: something that dates back a long time and is way beyond their understanding. And, if that wasn't enough, a psychic of undeniable reputation then informs Siri that he will die soon: in 'a day or two', to be precise.
