When I started studying philosophy, I had a basic motivation: to clarify my thoughts and properly pose my questions.
Philosophy did not have answers to my questions. Problems posed at the existential level can only be solved at the existential level. But the long and arduous journey was not in vain. And it is precisely the gains of this journey that I wanted to record in this essay.
First of all, I learned what I cannot claim or prove. I also learned something else: that no one can live by what can be proven.
Then, I learned to respect the phenomenon. I learned to appreciate the truth and quality of immediate experience. The realms of art, love, and communication expanded and enriched. And from the beginning, these were the most important areas for me.
And again, I will conclude with one word: freedom.
There is thought that liberates — and thought that enslaves.
A reflective attitude and the scientific method certainly liberate. Dogmatisms and ideologies enslave.
If I have helped some people open their minds, free themselves from the guardianship (and need) of dogmas, to understand that a dogma-free life is not only possible but can also be absolutely positive, then I feel I have done something.
And that I can comfortably play my next backgammon game.
Knowing that life is sometimes tragic, sometimes incomprehensible, and sometimes wonderfully beautiful.
