Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is highly contagious and causes respiratory tract infections in patients of all ages, especially in infants and young children. The virus's transmissibility is significant, with more than 50% of children being exposed to it by the age of one year.

RSV infects the epithelial cells of the upper respiratory tract and leads to the formation of syncytia. The necrosis of these cells creates inflammatory secretions and airway obstruction, leading to various problems.
