The book How to Mix Drinks or The Companion for the Good Time by Jerry Thomas (New York, 1862) is a historical work conceived by the legendary bartender Jerry Thomas (1830-1885) in 1862, making it the first drink guide ever published in America. This guide sets out principles for creating mixed drinks of all categories, including eighty-six different types of punch, as well as a variety of cocktails and inventions.
Thomas popularized drinks and elevated the practice of bartending into an art form. At the height of his popularity in the 19th century, people across the country enjoyed the flavors of his recipes, such as Mint Julep, Locomotive, Fix, Flip, and many others, including his signature cocktail, the Blue Blazer, which involves pouring flaming whiskey between two glasses to produce a dramatic spark effect.
During Abraham Lincoln's presidency, Jerry Thomas laid the foundation for today’s cocktail renaissance.
