Description

Description

Rich, respected, and deeply rooted in tradition, the Buddenbrooks family embodies the values of the 19th-century German bourgeoisie. However, as the modern era and changes sweep across Europe, their once stable world begins to collapse, along with the principles on which they built their success. Spanning four generations, this semi-autobiographical novel records the transition from noble German stability to a very modern uncertainty.
Mann's prose captures with remarkable accuracy both the rhythms of bourgeois life and the inner world of his characters, revealing how personal weaknesses reflect the decay of an entire way of life. At the same time a family epic, social novel, and reflection on modernity, Buddenbrooks established Thomas Mann as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century and contributed to his award of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

  • Genre: Classic Literature / Family Epic.
  • Atmosphere: A haunting and melancholic reflection on the slow decline of a once glorious family.

In the book you will encounter:

  • The rise and inevitable fall of an urban dynasty over the course of four generations.

  • The conflict between strict business ethics and the need for artistic expression.

  • The social changes and personal sacrifices imposed by the duty to uphold the family name.

Why We Loved It:

  • This is one of the greatest works of world literature that earned the author the Nobel Prize.

  • Mann's writing uniquely captures the psychology of the characters and the atmosphere of the era with remarkable accuracy.

  • Although written many years ago, the way it addresses the theme of failure and expectations remains striking.

This book is for you if...

Do you want to immerse yourself in a rich, classic story that explores how time and people's choices can erode even the strongest foundations of a family.

Read an excerpt:

««What is this, what is this?» «Yes… you see… c’est la question, ma très chère demoiselle!» The consul Buddenbrooks, sitting next to her mother-in-law on the snow-white sofa with straight backs, whose wood was painted white and had golden lines, glanced at her husband who was sitting in an armchair near her and hurried to help her little daughter, who was held by her grandfather on his lap, next to the window.»
