Type 1 Diabetes (T1DM) is a multifactorial chronic disease, one of the most common public health issues today, and is considered responsible for high rates of morbidity and premature mortality. The onset of T1DM not only causes physical symptoms and bodily changes due to high blood glucose levels, but also forces patients to enter into a continuous process of adjustment to a completely new lifestyle, thus provoking intense feelings of sadness, anxiety, uncertainty, ambivalence, and confusion. Furthermore, patients with T1DM suffer from the consequences of stigmatization due to social prejudice and representations of the disease, also losing the sense of integrated self and identifying with the illness, creating an internal world mainly comprised of the experiences of the disease.
This book presents an Intervention Model that was used for a two-year Combined Group Therapy with adult patients with Type 1 Diabetes, which combines principles and techniques from various psychotherapeutic approaches. The main goals of the Model are: diabetes management, achieving glycemic control, resolving psychological conflicts, eliminating shame regarding the communication of the diagnosis in the social environment, and redefining the illness. All of the above goals lead to the empowerment of the "integrated self" and enhance the psychological stability and self-confidence of patients.
