Mr. de Poursonniac is considered one of the most relentless Molière works that addresses the main and beloved themes running through his theatrical corpus: forced marriage, money, and illness.
Julia and Erastus are two young lovers who cannot marry because the young woman's father, Orontes, has other ambitions for his daughter. He plans her to wed a stranger, a lawyer from Limoges named Mr. de Poursonniac.
The latter is wealthier than Erastus and certainly practices a respectable profession as a lawyer. The two young people then devise a plan to discredit and defame the hero from Limoges, aiming to prevent the father's choice, cause the marriage to fail, and rid themselves of the unwanted suitor.
The result is a series of tricks that will force Mr. de Poursonniac to leave Paris.
