This monograph aims to deepen the understanding of the development and activities of rural organizations in Greece from 1881 to 1936. Its fundamental position is that the creation of rural organizations was a key link in the chain of broader transformations that began to take place in the Greek rural sector at the end of the 19th century and accelerated during the early decades of the 20th century.
Therefore, the Greek experience should not be examined as an isolated example but rather placed within a broader European context. Although the development of rural organizations and the implementation of a consistent rural policy may have lagged behind other European countries, linking these developments to emerging trends at the European level is essential for a better understanding of them.
It is no coincidence that agronomists, who spearheaded the founding of rural organizations and cooperatives as early as the late 19th century, studied in foreign countries. The influence of the experiences they gained abroad is also reflected in a significant portion of the political personnel, who pressed for reform initiatives.
Within this interpretive framework, the legislations enacted in other countries, such as those concerning cooperatives and rural credit, are examined, which served as models upon which the corresponding Greek legislative acts were based.
