Giannis Sakellarios was Greek, German, Bavarian, and a deeply European. His first citizenship – Greek – was revoked due to his activism against the military junta.
During his years in exile in Munich, he began the path that would lead him to the highest levels of the German Social Democratic Party – the SPD. He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for the first time in 1984 and served as the representative of the Socialist Group for foreign policy in the European Parliament from 1989 to 2004. In this capacity, he traveled to conflict zones, negotiated with leaders of authoritarian regimes, served as an election observer, and acted as a mediator.
