Description

Take a journey through the complete illustrated history of the powerful Mercedes-AMG, from the Red Pig race car to today’s 1063-plus horsepower Mercedes-AMG ONE.

For decades, Mercedes-Benz was primarily known as a producer of luxury sedans, grand touring coupes, and stylish roadsters. But race cars like its 1950s Silver Arrows and the stunning 300SL served as reminders that performance was ingrained in its DNA, always just below the surface.

Wanting to unlock that performance, two former Mercedes-Benz engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, teamed up in 1967 to focus on building Mercedes-based racing machines. Mercedes-AMG tells the unlikely, incredible story of how they transformed a stodgy Benz sedan into the all-conquering Red Pig race car and thus founded one of Germany’s premier high-performance car companies: AMG.

Significant success in endurance and touring competitions led AMG to a second business: modifying production Mercedes-Benz vehicles for passionate customers. By the 1980s, AMG was designing and building high-performance engine assemblies, allowing them to modify Mercedes engines to previously unseen levels of power. Legendary cars like the AMG Hammer were born from this effort.

Mercedes was well aware of AMG’s achievements, and in 1990, a formal partnership was established between the two companies, leading to jointly developed performance cars sold and serviced through Mercedes-Benz dealerships. In 2005, Mercedes-Benz fully acquired AMG, creating Mercedes-AMG, the company's high-performance division.

Mercedes-AMG covers the complete history of these German powerhouse cars, including:

  • Early racing exploits in the 1960s
  • The iconic Hammer and Black Series models
  • Today’s exclusive, high-performance Mercedes-AMG models ranging from the 420hp A45 hatchback to the 680hp C63 station wagon to the astonishing 1063hp Mercedes-AMG ONE
  • Prototypes, racing vehicles, and special editions

This beautifully illustrated volume belongs on the shelf of every Mercedes enthusiast.
