Wanting to unlock that performance, two former Mercedes-Benz engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, teamed up in 1967 to focus on building Mercedes-based racing machines. By the 1980s, AMG was designing and building high-performance engine assemblies, allowing them to modify Mercedes engines to previously unseen levels of power. Legendary cars like the AMG Hammer were born from this effort.

Mercedes was well aware of AMG’s achievements, and in 1990, a formal partnership was established between the two companies, leading to jointly developed performance cars sold and serviced through Mercedes-Benz dealerships. In 2005, Mercedes-Benz fully acquired AMG, creating Mercedes-AMG, the company's high-performance division.
