Description

The first illustrated book that celebrates the remarkable stories and achievements of twenty of the most daring women climbers from around the world. As adventures like mountaineering and rock climbing continue to grow in popularity worldwide, the visibility of women in the sport has also increased.

Mountaineering Women is the first publication of its kind, a richly illustrated collection of stunning and often astonishing stories celebrating the successes of twenty women mountaineers from all over the world. From the Amazigh (Berbers) of the Atlantic Mountains to the Inca Empire high in the Andes, women have crossed the most challenging and forbidden points on earth.

Many centuries later, when mountaineering began to develop as a sport in the West, it was daring Victorian women who defied tradition to conquer the renowned peaks of the European Alps. Despite the rich and evident history of women in the sport, their presence is notably absent from mountaineering literature.

Mountaineering Women aims to correct a narrative that often focuses on the exploits of white, male "explorers." The climbers come from a wide variety of nations, and each of their exciting stories is accompanied by a specially commissioned ink illustration and revealing black-and-white photographs. Three 16-page photo sections reveal climbers in action and mountain landscapes in all their grandeur.

At the end of the main chapters, there is a comprehensive introduction written by Nandini Purandare, and a closing essay by Ashima Shiraishi that looks toward the future of the sport.
