In a hidden corner of the Switchboard office, a queer helpline operating since 1974, dozens of accounting books kept by volunteers describe the phone calls they received: a teenager whose parents had kicked out of the house because of the "wrong" way of dressing, a lesbian afraid of losing her baby, a man who was arrested for talking to another man in a public restroom, a young person wanting to learn how to come out.
These records were traces of tens of thousands of queer lives, a bridge to a past hidden from people like Tash Walker and Adam Zmith in their adolescence, documented by those who listened to those in need. Walker and Zmith grew up during the era of Section 28, a law that prohibited local authorities and schools from "promoting the teaching of homosexuality as a pretend family relationship." Recounting these records, they encountered people struggling with feelings, questions, and issues as intimate as well as different, and decided to learn from — and sometimes speak with — those on both sides of the calls.
Filled with joy, gossip, sensuality, humor, and sometimes fear, and highly relevant to today's world, these stories are compiled in The Log Books.
