Description

In his new book, Emeritus Professor Stergios Bababanis describes his life in relation to the analysis of significant events that took place during his generation (1935-2025). His book identifies three periods.

The first period includes his childhood years during World War II and the Greek Civil War. He describes the negative impacts that the occupation had on education and living conditions. He praises the brave Greek National Resistance while characterizing the Civil War as a mistake.

The second period covers the 35 years he spent abroad (1947-1982). He witnessed firsthand the historic experiment of socialist transformation in Hungary, the Soviet Union, and other former socialist countries, the collapse of the socialist system, and the reestablishment of capitalism. In his works, he critically analyzes the main characteristics of the so-called "real socialism" and the causes of its collapse.

The third period began in 1982 with his return to Greece, which took place at the invitation of Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou. In Greece, he continued academic teaching, research, and was involved in planning the development of the Greek economy, developing telecommunications as President of OTE, and promoting Greece's economic relations with the former socialist countries.

A key conclusion of his research on capitalism is that, historically, it transforms mainly through expanding state interventionism, creating mixed economies, turning businesses into corporations, multinational companies, and platforms, globalization, separating ownership from management, expanding the middle class, establishing Collective Labour Agreements and the welfare state. These changes improved living conditions but did not solve the social problems of capitalism, did not eliminate poverty, unemployment, inequalities, environmental pollution, crises, and wars.

Based on long-term trends, he concludes that the transformation tendency of capitalism could lead in the future to the creation of a Sustainable Society of Prosperity characterized by the implementation of sustainability principles, a new Welfare State, widespread prosperity, the humanization of societies, a planned reduction of working hours, increased leisure time, and the establishment of a universal basic guaranteed income. The author supports the idea that the Sustainable Society of Prosperity is a desirable and realistic vision.
