This book provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of experimentation and research methodology in Agricultural Sciences (and beyond). Its content is based on recorded lectures given during courses such as "Statistics," "Agricultural Experimentation," "Biometrics," and "Biostatistics," at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Emphasis is placed on the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), which is the primary statistical method for processing data collected from experiments in the field of Biological Sciences. All stages of experimental design and setup are described, including basic experimental layouts, steps and strategies for statistical data analysis, as well as methods for presenting and statistically interpreting results/findings.
Additionally, numerical calculations are presented in detail, step by step, in such a way that, where possible, the concept of variability or dispersion of the involved quantities is highlighted. Special attention is also given to the assumptions and prerequisites that must be met to ensure that the results and, consequently, the conclusions drawn from statistical analyses are valid and reliable.
An important message the author aims to convey is that there is a difference between the statistical significance of a result and its practical, biological importance. Therefore, emphasis is placed on constructing confidence intervals and calculating effect sizes or impact measures.
Furthermore, many examples of experiments from the field of Biological Sciences are presented, along with questions, projects, and exercises aimed at deepening understanding of concepts and methods. The book also includes a "colloquium" of questions and inquiries that students have posed over time during lectures (accompanied by their answers).
Finally, there is a dedicated chapter on the use of software (IBM SPSS Statistics) for statistical analysis, examples of individual or group work, and comprehension questions (either open-ended or in quiz format). This manual is particularly useful for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Agricultural and Biological Sciences, as well as for educators teaching this scientific subject at the tertiary level.
