In the kitchen of dentist Alzeandor di Luare, everyday life hides more than meets the eye. With his wife away from home and cook Eutychia constantly present, balances are tested and the boundaries between duty and desire begin to blur.
Within an environment full of insinuations, glances, and unexpected situations, the kitchen transforms into a stage of misunderstandings, romantic twists, and comedic clashes, revealing that nothing remains hidden when people face themselves.
Written in 1859, the work remains remarkably relevant, illuminating human relationships, unspoken desires, and misunderstandings that arise unexpectedly with sarcasm and tenderness.
“By studying the translation as well as the direction of the play, I delved into archives, libraries, staging, iconography, articles, and reviews of the era, and discovered that this work had undergone severe moral censorship during its first production, in a frenzy of hypocrisy. [...] With particular emotion, I touch the original manuscript of the author, identifying the interventions of the censors. After comparing and restoring the original text, the work regains its true meaning and form. [...] In 2008, at the Theatre of the Day, we had the privilege to premiere [...] a work as the author wrote it and no one ever saw it that way, not even himself,” states Andromache Montzoli, who undertook the translation and dramaturgical editing of the text.
“The voltière is for Labis the most common pretext in his intellectual games, it offers nothing to the plot, it emphasizes, underlines, marks a pause where the protagonist speaks privately, or summarizes in a duet, trio, etc., the closing of a scene or even the entire play,” adds Jacqueline Razgonnikoff in the appendix to the text, and Anna Sotriini “concludes by saying ‘My pot’s journey is the petty bourgeois class and all social classes together in one image. Eugène Labis is not a thinker building systems; he is the creator revealing cracks. His farce is not just comedy; it is a mechanism.
