Description & Specifications

Can someone abandon their father and mother? Can they close the door behind them, walk down the stairs, and decide they never want to see them again?

Ten years after escaping from a toxic and violent family, a son records his difficult memories. This painful yet redemptive retrospection brings to life the portrait of a mother condemned to live in obscurity and a sly, suffocating patriarchal regime.

A book about coming of age and the tyranny of memory, which dissects the totalitarianism of the family like no other. A story that hurts, disarms, and exposes with its truth.

Genre: Contemporary Literature / Drama

Atmosphere: An evocative and introspective story that explores memory and human relationships through a quiet tension.

In the book you will encounter:

  • The effort of a man to cope with loss and the memories of the past.

  • A solitary journey through a frozen landscape that reflects the hero's emotional state.

  • The complexity of bonds and the marks that people leave on our lives.

Why we loved it

  • For Bajani's unique writing, which manages to give great depth to everyday moments.

  • For the way he describes the landscape, making nature seem like a living character in the story.

  • Because it is a moving study on loneliness and how we come to terms with our past.

This book is for you if...

You enjoy atmospheric stories that focus on the psychology of the characters and poetic writing, rather than on fast-paced action.

Read an excerpt:

“There was not a soul on the street. The snow had covered everything, and the streetlights cast a yellow glow that made the white surface look like an old photograph. He walked slowly, feeling the cold pierce through his coat, but he didn’t care. It was the anniversary day and he had to reach his destination.

Each of his steps left a deep imprint, a temporary signature on the virgin snow that the wind would soon erase. He thought about how much this resembled his life: a series of traces struggling to remain visible before oblivion covered them. He stopped for a moment and looked back, but the darkness had already swallowed the path he had traveled.

There was no turning back, only moving forward. The house appeared in the distance, a black silhouette on the white hill, with only one light on at the ground floor. He knew they were waiting for him, or at least that’s what he wanted to believe in order to find the strength to take the last few steps.”
