Description

A testimony about the uprooting of the Greeks of Eastern Thrace. The story begins in 1899 and continues with the bitter refugees of 1914 from Koumbaya.

"'Kute, 'kute villagers! Dimitros Striglos is dead!" "Miss, Dimitros was killed in the field…!" My widow mother needed someone to manage her estate, her property, her vineyards…

The Damianos I married eventually became my husband. I was twelve then, and he was twenty-one… He went to Aivali in Eastern Thrace to collect dowries for our wedding, and I stayed to grow a little. When he returned, our wedding took place. From there, everything begins.

We were close with the Turkish clerks in our village. Soinis cared for us and advised us many times. But then Bulgarians, bad Turks, persecution… Our wandering begins in 1914 to Peraia, Stylida, the castle of Lamia, Molos, Volos.

During the repatriation of 1920, we returned to our homeland in Koumba. Finally, with the exchange of populations in 1922, we bid farewell forever to our beloved village, our Saint Panteleimon, our vineyards, our cherry trees, our fluffy soil mounds, the seaside of Marmara, for good. We will never forget our beach from the windows…
