Description

The Tomatillo ‘Queen of Malinalco’ (Physalis ixocarpa) is an authentic traditional variety from Mexico, distinguished by its elongated, golden-yellow fruit. The fruits ripen inside the characteristic dry husk, an element that makes the tomatillo immediately recognizable, and it is one of the most well-known tomatillo varieties and a key ingredient in authentic Mexican cuisine.

The flavor of the fruits is mild, fruity, with slight acidity and a refreshing texture. They can be consumed both raw and cooked. The ‘Queen of Malinalco’ variety is ideal for salsa verde, sauces, dips, and accompaniments for meat or roasts. When the fruits are fully ripe, they acquire a vivid golden-yellow color and a more fleshy texture, making them suitable for fresh consumption as well.

The plant is relatively easy to cultivate. It requires good sunlight, well-drained soil, and support, as it grows vigorously and produces a large number of fruits.

For proper pollination and maximum yield, it is recommended to plant at least two tomatillo plants close to each other. The production is high, with continuous harvesting throughout the summer.

In summer growing seasons and warm areas of Greece, it performs excellently. Its fruits are flavorfully enhanced when combined with hot peppers and lime, which explains why tomatillo is a basic ingredient of traditional Mexican cuisine.
