The film is based on the novel by Maria Dabrowska about the fate of two generations of the Uncicz family and their friends. The central heroine is Barbara, who, after a life full of love and fear of aging, marries Bogumił Niecicz. Soon, a son is born from this marriage, whose early death casts a heavy shadow.
