In this study, Michalis Grigoriou, inspired by Einstein's poetic statement "As time passes, I tend to believe that the Universe resembles less a machine and more a vast thought," attempts to formulate a "unified theory of systemic functions." Of course, being aware of how audacious such an endeavor is—belonging to the field of philosophy of science—he characterizes this study as "fictional."
In reality, however, it is a manual that examines the unity of matter and evolution and attempts to reveal the unified framework that connects all physical phenomena, from the subatomic level and the arrangement of the universe to life, human thought, and social behavior.
Following a personal writing style, the author sometimes "converses" with the reader through direct questions and reflections, interjecting and correlating information from various scientific fields.
The bold question posed along the way is the following: could the common parameters, observed in the ways various forms of systemic organization of physical and living phenomena operate—all based on determinism—be described—metaphorically—as parameters of the development of some kind of "intelligence" of nature?
Such a daring idea leads to the conclusion that the phenomenon of the manifestation of "intelligence," at various degrees of structural and systemic complexity, refers to the classic "matryoshka dolls" nested within each other!
However, as the scale of observation changes and we move from categories of inanimate to categories of living systems—due to the development initially of pre-linguistic sensory communication and behavior systems in animals, and then of forms of symbolic-linguistic communication (in humans and animals)—various bold uses of concepts such as "intentionality," "self-awareness," etc., gradually cease to have the metaphorical meaning of an "intelligence" describing the existence of deterministic cause-and-effect relationships and begin to acquire the literal human meaning attributed to them through linguistic categorization and management.
