This book for me is both a warning and a reminder. I hope you never experience what I have gone through.

In April 1993, Steven Lawrence was murdered by a group of young white men on a street in Southeast London. From the initial police investigation, the case was mishandled. Ultimately, much later, after the case against the five suspects was dropped, the government was forced to yield to growing pressure and conduct a public inquiry, which became the most explosive in British legal history.

These events leave the reader unprepared for Doreen Lawrence's personal story about her son's murder. In this raw, honest book, she simply writes about her childhood, her fight for a decent life for herself and her children, and her hopes for her bright, driven son. The account of the murder and the poorly planned, insensitive police investigation is deeply moving. It recreates the pain, disappointment, and confusion she experienced as she realized that there might never be a moment when she could tell herself that justice had been served.

A re-investigation of the cold case led to the discovery of DNA in 2009. In November 2011, two of the alleged participants in the gang that killed Steven were finally brought to trial at Old Bailey. One guilty party was convicted on January 3, 2012.
