This is not a theatrical performance. This is a poem in multiple meters, set at night at the mouth of the Severn River. Its theme is the moonrise, which occurs five times in five different forms: new Moon, half Moon, full Moon, no Moon, and the moon's rebirth.

Various characters, some alive, some dead – all based on real people from the Severn area – speak at the moment of moonrise and change from it. The poem, written for the Severn Festival in 2009, aims to capture what happens when the moon moves above us – its influence on the water and its effect on the voices.

"A Sleepwalk on the Severn" is a poem for many voices, set at night at the mouth of the Severn. Alice Oswald's intention is to capture her remarkably innovative new work, which records what happens when the moon moves over the sub-lunar world: its impact on the water and its influence on language.
