The birth of the Greek state was the result of the Revolution. However, this state would have been very different if it had been formed with the victory of the Revolution itself. It would not have been a dependent small state, with internal social structures and inequalities intact.

This was largely tested in Missolonghi, where gods and demons, the "great sea," came upon this "little hut," the "glorious threshing floor" of Dionysios Solomos. Yet even against the "bolt of Turkey," the "devil of Arabia," the "mind of the French," and the "place of the English," the "little hut" did not fall. Its defenders preferred to "cut a path with swords and remain free" when "hunger darkened their eyes."

And here comes the big question: Why did "hunger darken their eyes"? Why were the defenders of Missolonghi allowed to bow before this invincible enemy, hunger? Was it an inevitable development, impossible to ensure their supplies? The answer given by this book is a decisive no! The abandonment of the fighters was a conscious choice by the Greek government, even at a time when there were tremendous financial possibilities due to loans.

The "Freebesieged" were betrayed by those who had the duty to support them. Let us remind the words of Ibrahim: "Like the mountain snow, we would have melted if Missolonghi had food for 15 more days." But it did not have...
