Although Nikos Kazantzakis is well known to the general public, his work was read fragmentarily and his political ideas disturbed many. The complexity of his books, in which the interaction between historical events and the history of thought is intense, did not receive the attention it deserved.

This original interpretation is carried out by Lambros Kouloubaritsis, highlighting this overlooked element in Kazantzakis' life and work, with the first and characteristic example being "Askitiki", where God and man collaborate timelessly in overturning divine omnipotence.

Referring to historical and mythical models and other figures who embody pain and suffering, he presents a moral suffering that Kazantzakis himself experienced as a child in Crete, then during the Balkan Wars, later as responsible for the repatriation of Greeks from the Caucasus, but also in defeated Germany at the time of the Asia Minor Catastrophe, as well as in his travels to Russia before the Occupation and the Civil War.

All of these explain his political transcendences, from nationalism, communism, and post-communism to even fascism, with a significant turning point being his trip to England in 1939, where, admiring its political freedom, he embraced democratic socialism, only to ideologically distance himself from the British government in 1946.

Since then, his struggle turned against colonialism and in favor of the union of Cyprus with Greece, with a horizon of multiculturalism and peace.
