This edition preserves the spirit and aesthetics of a period when Popeye's adventures enjoyed tremendous success. Through its pages, readers have the opportunity to enjoy the classic artwork and the unique style that characterized the comics of that era, offering an authentic retro experience that is rare nowadays.
We all know, more or less, Popeye, or at least we've heard of him. His name has become known through movies, video games, cartoons and, of course, comics. Internationally, the creation of Elzie Crisler Segar managed to connect with an entire spectrum of generations, from 1929 to today. In 2002, TV Guide placed Popeye at number 20 on the list of the "50 Greatest Cartoon Characters of All Time."
Budd Sagendorf (1915-1994) is the creator with the longest career on the Popeye comic strip. He created many dozens of stories about the beloved sailor, both as comics and as daily and Sunday newspaper strips, enriching the universe of our favorite sailor with many new characters, while deepening the already existing ones. In Greece, he became very popular through the magazines of the publisher "Dragounis," which were available at kiosks from 1973 until the mid-1990s. However, for practical reasons, the stories underwent changes, since they were originally created to be printed in American newspapers, not in kiosk comic magazines.
In the series Classic Popeye Stories, we present these tales in their original, authentic form. This is a series produced by us, aiming to let you read the adventures of the famous sailor without any cuts, exactly as published in America. Most of the stories have been recently redistributed by King Features Syndicate and are available edited and in color. Those stories that remained black and white until now have been colored by our publishing house according to the standards of the American editions, and are presented in the correct chronological order, ensuring complete chronological continuity.
More specifically, the following 12 comic stories are included:
- A Sneak Peek at Life!
- Showdown!
- Two and Unique!
- Half a Portion!
- Get Lost!
- Grandpa's Secret!
- Mental Power!
- Home!
- The Ghost King!
- The Olympics of the Salty Sea!
- The Great Loss!
- The Return of Salty!
Additionally, you will find a series of features, among which:
- Popeye Goes to Japan!
- The Ancestor's Ghost!
