Description

This book is an approach to applied fluid mechanics. It covers the theory of applied fluid mechanics of Newtonian fluids and contains an extensive collection of solved as well as suggested exercises and problems to be solved, which have been used during more than ten years of teaching the course Applied Fluid Mechanics in the 6th semester of the department, now the School of Mineral Resources Engineering at the Technical University of Crete.

There are twelve chapters, including the bibliography and appendix. Introductory definitions are given in the first chapter, and fluid statics is presented in the second chapter. The third chapter deals with fluid kinematics and includes mass, momentum, and energy balances as well as the fundamental equation of fluid mechanics, Bernoulli's equation. The fourth chapter concerns dimensional analysis, the semi-empirical method that allows the preliminary modeling of physical phenomena. The fifth chapter covers the calculation of primary and secondary energy losses due to friction in laminar and turbulent flow in closed conduits of various cross-sections. This is followed by the sixth chapter, which analyzes compressible flow phenomena, while the seventh chapter addresses basic measurements in fluid mechanics.

The eighth chapter is about the calculation of pumps and pumping units. Flow in open channels and conduits is discussed in the ninth chapter, while the tenth chapter describes the theory and calculations for estimating the settling velocity of solid particles in Newtonian fluids. The eleventh chapter contains the relevant general bibliography, both Greek and foreign, covering the broad range of fluid mechanic phenomena. The twelfth chapter includes tables and diagrams of physical properties. It is worth noting that many references and footnotes are made in each chapter, with observations from the author's experience as well as significant bibliography of 42 articles and related books.

At the beginning of each chapter, the corresponding theory is presented, followed by solved exercises and suggested exercises, most of which are accompanied by solutions. In total, there are 74 examples for understanding the theory, 191 exercises with detailed solutions, and 149 suggested exercises to be solved.
