We stand upright among the ruins. We bear on our faces the wounds, the suffering, and the desolation of the age. Yet, we have turned our backs on the destruction. Not because we are blind to it. But because we hope for something beyond it: in the clearing of History, which will emerge when all the catastrophic scenarios of this world have been fulfilled; in a life of a century beyond every future, which will come to destroy the very destruction itself.

This is why the title of this book should not be understood in the cinematic sense of the term “happy end” (“phew, the destruction was avoided, how nice!”), but in the sense that we see the end of the destruction within its over-completion, at the same time as we are staggering and suffering within its vortex.
