The Constitution derives from all citizens and is addressed directly to all citizens. With the adoption of the first Constitution, and even before a structured Greek State existed, the revolutionary Greeks proclaimed their political existence and independence on January 1, 1822, in Epidaurus. On September 3, 1843, the Greeks demanded a Constitution from King Otto. With the final article of the 1952 Constitution, Article 114 for the observance of the Constitution entrusted to the patriotism of the Greeks, citizens defended the parliamentary system in difficult times. The adoption of the current Constitution in June 1975 completed the Metapolitefsi, the transition from a seven-year military dictatorship to democracy.
However, despite its fundamental importance, the Constitution is taught only superficially in schools, politicians often use it as a political argument, and many citizens know little about it. Worse still, many do not even know what rights are protected by the constitutional text. All of this is usually left to constitutional experts, as if they form a priesthood that will decode the Constitution and deliver it to the people. Disappointment often follows since constitutional lawyers often disagree among themselves!
This book aims to make the Constitution accessible to every citizen. For this reason, the full text of the current Constitution is included in this edition. However, to understand its value and function, one must first be informed about its historical context and background and comprehend certain basic concepts. In a simple, but not oversimplified, way.
