Description

The reasons that prompted us to write and publish this small treatise are as follows: Teaching the history of the great struggle here at the "Society of Friends of the People" and taking the opportunity to speak, among other things, about Philhellenism in Europe as an important factor in the success of this struggle, I was naturally led to also discuss German Philhellenism, which is the most significant and holds the primary position in the chapter of the history of Philhellenism. The impression created by this among many of the esteemed listeners was profound, because, being prejudiced by the daily writings in the press about the so-called Protecting Powers and their peoples as the only Philhellenes, they did not expect to hear that German Philhellenism was the first and most genuine form of Philhellenism.
