Description

Katérina Yue Wu's monograph systematically examines the Greek-Chinese relations from the end of World War II until the first official visit of a Greek prime minister to Beijing, that of Konstantinos Karamanlis, in 1979. This is the first comprehensive and well-documented study that deeply captures the political, ideological, and cultural dimension of Greece's relations with the People's Republic of China during the turbulent post-war period.

Utilizing extensive archival material, the Greek and Chinese press, as well as travel testimonies, the author analyzes both the official Greek positions and public discourse about China, as well as the reception of Greek issues by the Chinese media. The research sheds light on critical aspects such as Athens' stance towards nationalist and later communist China, the rivalries within the framework of American aid, the involvement of the two countries in the Korean War, Greece's non-recognition of Beijing until the early 1970s, and the gradual restoration of bilateral relations.

Going beyond the boundaries of traditional diplomatic history, the work combines international politics and intercultural communication, examining mutual representations, ideological conflicts, and cultural perceptions that shaped each country's image of the other. At the same time, it opens a new chapter in the study of post-war Greek foreign policy, expanding the research field beyond the established axes.
