Description & Specifications

A garden that does not need watering: this is the dream for all those who wish to harmonize their garden with the environment while also contributing to the preservation of a precious natural resource like water.

Drought – a common phenomenon in many areas of the Earth, but also a new reality for others, as it is linked to global warming – can be a significant advantage for those involved in landscape design, plant cultivation, and gardening. It offers them the opportunity to choose plants that were previously unknown to them, but which stand out for their lush foliage, flowering, shape, and fragrances.

But how can we create such a garden? Which plants should we choose and how will they survive during drought periods? What techniques should we use for soil preparation, planting, and plant care? The book, the result of twenty years of daily engagement with plants for dry landscapes, provides precise answers to all these questions.

With rich illustrations – over 400 photographs of plants, gardens, and landscapes – more than 500 species are described: a large variety of perennial plants and shrubs that can form the basis for landscapes adapted to drought conditions.

Around 25 years ago, Olivier and Clara Philippi created a nursery near Sète, in southern France, with an outstanding collection of plants for dry gardens, a collection unique in variety and number of species included. This experience, connected with numerous research trips to Mediterranean climate areas around the world, as well as many trials in an experimental garden with xerophytes, makes Olivier Philippi an undisputed expert in dry gardens.
