What we call "internal-psychic reality" and "external reality" do not have absolutely clear and distinct boundaries. They interpenetrate and reshape the conditions of existence for each subject as they mutate.

Analytical thought does not accept the simplistic idea of an objective reality unfolding independently, in front of a neutral, impervious observer, nor the belief that there is an internal scene, where an absolutely protected and purified subjective experience develops free from impurities.

During the analytical process, the diffusion of experiences between the analyst and the analysand emerges through the transference-countertransference transaction. It also becomes evident how vulnerable the analytical condition is when threatened by intense external situations that can invade unexpectedly and forcefully.

This monograph gathers psychoanalytic articles that explore the concepts of internal and external reality and the terms of their intertwining, both on a theoretical level and primarily on the level of clinical experience.
