Thoughts on the spectacle of sound, the musical experience, tonal and atonal music, and the musicality of Cavafy's poetry
The texts in this book are dedicated to the study of sound, music, and poetry. They set as their central issue the relationship and contrast between organized musical sound—within the context of Western culture in the 20th century—and noise. It is a fact that in the modern world, with the rapid spread of noise, a despotic regime is being established that threatens to suppress all artful or even "comprehensible" sound. The person of our time is no longer able to guard within themselves that inner space necessary to reflect on their life and also to listen for the "mystical murmur [...] of approaching events," as Cavafy had already warned.
Against this threat of acoustic and semantic confusion, the art of music opposes its own offerings, mainly the awakening and shaping of emotions, according to certain rules and with a language that can reach the innermost parts of the soul. This is the language we will explore here.
