At the beginning of the 20th century's catastrophes, Elisabeth Langgässer and Hermann Broch attempt to make sense of them in their epoch analyses The Sleepwalkers and The Indelible Seal. They combine cultural pessimism with philosophical reflections on history and motifs of salvation history to create new interpretative patterns.
The aim of the study is to reconstruct the various patterns of meaning and to situate the textual statements within the discourse of the time. Both novels interpret modernity as decay and portray their own present as a historical turning point with apocalyptic qualities.
In Broch's text, the experience of violence becomes a revelation of a cold god. Using quotes from the work of the dictatorship supporter Donoso Cortés, Langgässer develops a critique of National Socialism and, due to her anti-liberal stance, becomes entangled in ambivalences towards National Socialism.
