What is hallux valgus?
It is a deformity of the front part of the foot, resulting from the deviation of the big toe (hallux) towards the other toes. This shift causes a characteristic lateral bump at the head of the first metatarsal. The angle between the metatarsal of the big toe and that of the second toe gradually changes, and the base of the big toe moves outward. Over the years, deformities of the other toes and severe foot pain (metatarsalgia) may occur. The frequency of hallux valgus in women is 40%. In 75% of cases, hallux valgus affects both feet.
