The remarkable diversity of religions and religious cultures in India, documented for over two millennia. From its earliest recorded history, India has been a place of notable and diverse religious activity, ranging from intricate ritual sacrifices and strict codes of personal austerity to psychological and spiritual experimentation and utopian visions. In this ambitious and wide-ranging history, Richard Davis provides a story of India's countless religious cultures spanning two thousand years, from 1300 BC to 700 AD. As Davis writes, India was not only the birthplace of the religions we now know as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It was also the home of other, often anonymous religions that can be classified as "folk" or "popular" religions. Exploring these interconnected practices, Davis shows that the warm and heterogeneous religious cultures of early India came to define and redefine themselves in relation to one another.
Davis narrates this history through voices—voices recorded in hymns, poems, songs, didactic stories, epic narratives, scientific treatises, and theological speeches, as well as voices speaking through material remnants, whether monumental sculptures or small local forms of anonymous deities. He focuses on the long millennium often called "Classical India," which spans from the time of the founding forms of Buddhism and Jainism in the 6th century BC to the 7th-century AD dynasties of the Chalukyas and the Palavas in southern India. Throughout, he emphasizes the encounter, interaction, discussion, critique, and borrowing among religious communities within a shared, changing social and political reality. The voices and visions of early Indian religions, as Davis shows us, are fascinating in their diversity.
