The BMP-1 is a Soviet infantry fighting vehicle that was introduced into service in 1966. Designed as the first mass-produced vehicle of its kind, it combined mobility, amphibious capability, and stronger armament compared to previous carriers. Unlike the standard BTR-50P of the era, the BMP-1 was equipped not only with a machine gun but also with a cannon and an anti-tank guided missile launcher.

The BMP-1 was widely exported and for decades served as the backbone of many mechanized units. Apart from the USSR, Czechoslovakia and Romania purchased production licenses. Vehicles of this type were also used by the armed forces of Poland, Iraq, Greece, and the National People’s Army of East Germany.

Combat experience in many conflicts revealed its advantages, such as simple design and mobility, but also serious limitations, such as relatively weak armor and outdated weapons systems against rapidly evolving technology.
