The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was an American-made dive bomber torpedo aircraft from the interwar period and World War II, configured with a low-wing design. Power was provided by a single engine in the basic version, Pratt and Whitney R-1830-64, with 900 horsepower. The first flight of this aircraft took place in April 1935.
Serial production lasted from 1937 to 1939 and resulted in approximately 130 aircraft of this type. Its deck armament consisted of two 7.62 mm machine guns. The aircraft could also carry a bomb load of up to about 800 kilograms or a Mark XIII torpedo weighing approximately 1 ton.
The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was operated by the United States Navy, which in the mid-1930s decided to deploy a new dive bomber torpedo aircraft. In addition to the basic version, with a folding landing gear system, a TBD-1A version with fixed wings was also developed.
