The art of Laurel Burch (1945–2007) has a distinctly uplifting, joyful, and tender quality. The designs from the colorful Laurel Burch collection invite you on a flight of imagination, whether from the world of Fantastic Cats or a celebration of the Spirit of Female Nature.
Though Laurel had no formal training in art or jewelry making, she began composing interesting metal pieces she found in scrap yards. She created eccentric jewelry and developed her artistic style.
Laurel’s images are full of fantastic visions, vivid colors, and lively creatures. During her trip to China in 1971 to start mass production of her products, she discovered the technique of “cloisonné,” a traditional method of decorating metal surfaces with enamel. This technique became a hallmark of her artistic style.
Many of her paintings resemble cloisonné enamel with their small, colorful compartments. This design captures the magic found both in nature and the supernatural, honoring Laurel’s life and her artistic purpose.
