The study attempts to describe the hidden literary technique of Theodor Fontan, using the categories of the subject. Such a concept makes understandable the enigmatic, layered structure of meaning in his narrative works in a modeled way.
Using the example of his latest novel "Efi Briest," it is shown how Fontan, with great artistic effort, weaves a dense system of references to mythological elements beneath the narrative surface. The author's intention to connect such Christian, Norwegian, or Vedic myths is always at the forefront, on the one hand through evidence of deliberate use of signs, and on the other through an interpretative approach that relates the subject and the explicit text to each other.
