Heinrich Mann's short stories are a heterogeneous collection that resists analysis. The generic category is the key that unlocks access to them.

Once the affiliation of these texts within the genre of the German short story is determined, the coherence of this corpus becomes evident. The opposition—previously established in the first chapter—between the two forms of Novelle and Kurzgeschichte allows for the distinction of precise successive phases within Heinrich Mann's production.

This discovery primarily leads to a reassessment of the place of the short story in this author's work. Contrary to common opinion, this part of his literary oeuvre is by no means marginal. The present study highlights that the brief narrative text, in all its possible forms, occupies a central position in Mann's aesthetic universe, serving not only as preparatory work and an interlude between two novels but also as an aesthetic laboratory.

It is indeed possible to show that the short stories lie at the crossroads of all other textual forms used by the writer, whether narrative, dramatic, or non-fictional. The detailed examination of these often neglected works thus complements and enriches the image of a complex author who never ceased to innovate in narrative aesthetics.
