The subject of this study was to explore the relationship between disability ratings, stigma, and discrimination perceived by individuals affected by leprosy in a specialized dermatology center, as well as the consequences of discrimination.
The study was a mixed methods sequential study. For the quantitative approach, 164 patients underwent face-to-face interviews, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 patients for the qualitative method. The study was conducted from May 2019 to August 2019.
In the study, participants were aged 31 to 45 years, and most were men. The majority of participants belonged to a low-income group, and one-third had a high level of education. Using the quantitative method, 88.4% of participants were multibacillary patients. All participants agreed that awareness of the disease, health information, and rehabilitation can be effective measures to reduce stigma and discrimination.
The results of this study can provide greater understanding of the discrimination faced by individuals affected by leprosy for the national leprosy control program. Awareness about leprosy still needs to be strengthened to prevent leprosy-related disabilities.
