The Ukrainian diaspora in Canada has a settlement history spanning over one hundred years and represents one of the strongest ethnic groups in present-day Canada.
Regarding their national identity, the question arises: Are they Ukrainians, Canadian-Ukrainians, or Canadians? In Canada, Ukrainians have largely succeeded in preserving their own culture alongside, or rather alongside, the foreign. Canada has now become a prime example of a multicultural society.
Cultural differences between the familiar and the foreign are seen in Canada as an enrichment. Using the Ukrainians who emigrated to Canada as an example, the importance of preserving traditions in their many facets for maintaining national identity is examined.
