A modern historical book that analyzes the content of an unknown proclamation from the Greek Revolution, opening new avenues in understanding the identity and ambitions of the insurgents of 1821.
The Warning to the European Courts was sent, in various ways, from liberated Kalamata to Europe in March 1821 and shaped an initial image of the Greek Revolution abroad. Attempting to answer the mysteries surrounding its exact date of composition and the identity of the author, scholars of the past focused more on the title and specific parts of the text. This study highlights the appropriate historical context to definitively resolve these questions that have puzzled researchers for 205 years.
Starting from the assumption that the publications of the text consist of different manuscripts whose relationships can be identified, we arrive at a final answer regarding the date and the author. Thus, the most important questions that have persisted over time are brought to the forefront: Why are clergy, Christians, and religion missing from the Warning? What is the identity of the rebels in Kalamata and other regions in March 1821?
To provide a comprehensive view of the dissemination of the text and its interpretations, the edition includes 5 appendices where all necessary data are classified and documented to form a complete history of it. Most of the information published in these appendices has been unknown until now.
