Maggas, a cute fox terrier, lives in the home of a wealthy family in Alexandria. A series of mischiefs make him leave his home out of fear.

He finds himself for a few days in the poor neighborhoods of the city, where he faces the hardships of life and meets the stray Afratos. Their friendship will give rise to new emotions and thoughts in the spoiled Maggas and provide him with life lessons that will lead him to maturity.

Drawing elements from her childhood memories, the author presents, through Maggas's eyes, life in the thriving Greek community of Alexandria at the beginning of the 20th century, while also making references to the Macedonian Struggle, the revolution of 1821, and the defeat of 1897.
