Description

Electa publishes the catalog of the exhibition "Berthe Morisot in Nice. Impressionist Stops," organized at the Jules Chéret Museum of Fine Arts (June 8 – September 29, 2024) in partnership with the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa and the Musée d’Orsay.

Known as one of the founders of a group that changed the course of art history, Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) is recognized as the first female Impressionist. Her extremely varied work includes nearly five hundred paintings as well as a vast collection of watercolors, pastels, drawings, and even engravings.

In the 1880s, this prolific output drew inspiration from her dazzled discovery of the Riviera. This publication explores this lesser-known aspect of the artist’s life, who stayed twice in Nice during the winters of 1881-1882 and 1888-1889.

Featuring a significant number of unpublished documents—letters, sketches, more finished drawings, paintings—and based on extensive research, it thoroughly reconstructs Morisot’s stays and shows how the light, vegetation, and the city of Nice itself inspired the artist.

Indeed, Morisot’s works related to her time on the Riviera reveal the uniqueness of her work compared to the paintings of Monet and Renoir, who also painted there, and unveil an artist of great subtlety and virtuosity.
