The bioretention filtering system is the primary water conservation strategy that uses biochemical techniques within a plant ecosystem to maintain soil moisture, purify water, and retain stormwater in urban areas. This study aimed to design a bioretention filter in the Kharghar area of Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
The analysis was conducted for both small and large floods. The total flow rate was calculated at 0.023 m³/s for minor flood conditions and 0.037 m³/s for major flood conditions. The maximum infiltration rate was estimated at 0.0047 m³/s, considering sandy soil as the filtering medium. PVC pipes of 100 mm diameter were proposed, as they perform better and have advantages over other types of pipes.
The vegetation for the bioretention basin can be Doob grass or Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), as it has the highest water retention capacity according to soil conditions in India. Researchers involved in stormwater management, water outflow, and water conservation in their studies and research, as well as socioeconomic groups and non-governmental organizations, could benefit from this book.
