Description

In this masterpiece novella, the great German author explores the traps of male and female nature, as well as the limits of social stigma.

Young Mr. Friedemann is a young man with a slight physical disability, who "tenderly loved life, which flowed within him without many passions but full of a serene happiness." And although he has renounced love, he is fascinated by Gerda von Rinlingen, who unexpectedly invades his life and disrupts his seemingly calm world, awakening passions and feelings within him that he thought he had managed to suppress. Young Mr. Friedemann, one of Thomas Mann's earliest short stories - first published in 1897 - although it did not achieve great success upon its first release, today holds a special place in his work, and one can recognize in it the themes that would later preoccupy the author.

"The melancholy story of the little hunchback marks a milestone in the development of my work."
