The indifferent gentleman, who always strolled through Lisbon dressed impeccably as if the Portuguese capital were his personal lounge, and who never said no to a glass of wine in a café on the go, is Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), undoubtedly the greatest Portuguese poet of modern times. Apart from his work as a commercial representative, he created an impressively multifaceted body of work in his bachelor life of seclusion. As a lyrical poet, essayist, and publisher, he made his mark and published the futuristically influenced avant-garde magazine Orpheus – a constant voice of literary modernism. Portugal’s poetry also owes several invented poetic personalities to its poetically multidimensional nature, such as Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, Álvaro de Campos, and the assistant accountant Bernardo Soares. Equipped with their own biographies, these significant side projects were created under different names but were all written by Pessoa. Among these is the “Book of Akeida,” whose excerpts of thought reflect the poet’s intimate thoughts about his homeland and its people, and poetically and melancholically bring to life the soul of Lisbon.
