- The corrupt society of Sicily in 1877 set against the backdrop of the hated bread tax.
- Murder, dangerous traps, and dark scenes of cover-up.
- A protagonist forced to confront his enemies using their own dirty tactics.
“The Move of the Knight” is a detective novel in the form of a farcical comedy and, at the same time, a historical narrative based on a real event, as recorded in Politica e mafia in Sicilia (1876) by Leopoldo Franchetti.
The story unfolds in Montelusa and Vigata, in the autumn of 1877, at a time when the historical Left was in power (which in reality had nothing to do with left-wing parties), and society was experiencing intense dissatisfaction because of the ongoing, hated tax on flour.
In the province of Montelusa, Giovanni Bovara is assigned to serve as an inspector of mills. Bovara, who travels only by horse, was sent by the tax office where he works as an accountant to replace his colleagues, Tuttobene (who was eaten by fish) and Bendicò (who was devoured by dogs and shared the same name as the dog in the book The Leopard).
Various scenarios are set up to cover up Bovara’s reports on corruption. The inspector must be careful not to fall into the trap. However, he doesn't know whom to trust. Until the moment he decides to face his opponents’ “dirty game” by using their own methods against them.
